Harvey's Unique Treble

Leviathan breeder, and owner, Gerry Harvey enjoyed a treble of stakes winners on Saturday, February 19, that appears unique as they were at three different venues encompassed by a range of over 7000 kms.

The epicenter was at Rosehill Gardens with Aloha recording a commanding win in the $600,000 Group1 Coolmore Classic (1500m), while the others were Night of War, winner of the historic Group 2 Karrakatta Plate (1200m) for 2-year-olds at Perth’s Ascot, and Hold It Harvey, annexer of the Group 3 Rich Hill Stud Thompson Handicap (1600m) at Trentham, Wellington, New Zealand.

All three were bred by Gerry Harvey and raised on his historic Baramul stud, Widden Valley, but the only one he races was the star of the afternoon, the Mick Price (Caulfield) polished Aloha. This 4-year-old Encosta de Lago mare showed that she was one of the most capable ‘milers’ of this time and a serious candidate for the $2million Doncaster at Randwick on April 16 with her Coolmore victory. Saturday’s effort was her eighth win in 17 outings and her fifth in succession.

Harvey bred Aloha using Tennessee Midnight, a Listed winner in Melbourne got by Danehill from Tennessee Morn, a leading Bletchingly 2-year-old. She was out of Tennessee Vain, a triple Group 2 winner and Victoria Oaks second by the Nijinsky sire Whiskey Road.

The next dam, Misty Vain, was by Vain and went back to Rainbird, a champion racemare by The Buzzard who won eight races, including the Melbourne Cup (1945) and Wakeful Stakes, and was runner up in the Victoria Oaks, Caulfield Cup and Sydney Cup. Her half-brother Peter (by Peter Pan) was a close second in the 1944 Melbourne Cup.

Now winner twice, including the Karrakatta Plate, and second in the Magic Millions Perth 2YO Classic in four starts, Night of War sold in the Baramul draft at the Magic Millions Gold Coast January yearling sale for $90,000 to Aquanita Bloodstock. She is by General Nediym and from Samar, a Secret Savings Sydney winning half-sister to the gallant County Tyrone. This son of Danewin won nine races, including the AJC Sydney Cup, Metropolitan Handicap and QTC Queensland Derby. He was second and fourth twice each in four other cracks at the Sydney Cup.

Also a graduate of the Gold Coast sales, selling for $16,000 at the Magic Millions National yearling sale, Saturday’s New Zealand Harvey bred stakes winner Hold It Harvey is a tough 6-year-old who has been successful in 12 races up to 1600m, including eight stakes to Group 3 level. He has been second in a Group1 race.

Hold It Harvey is by King Cugat, a Kingmambo sire used at Widden in partnership with Harvey and is from the Harvey bred Best Western mare Daly Charm. Her grandam was a Nijinsky champion French juvenile, Princess Lida.
