Single Has The Bloodlines To Be A Derby Threat
Randwick trainer Craig Carmody has announced an ambitious target for emerging young stayer Single after the three-year-old's impressive win at Rosehill on Saturday.
The former jockey, best known for his association with multiple G1 winning galloper Intergaze, said that a trip north for the G1 Queensland Derby could be on the agenda if Single continues to please the stable.
"I thought he would run well today. He's always shown me nice staying potential," said Carmody.
"I plan on running him in a 2,000 metre race at Randwick next week if he pulls up well and I also threw in a speculative nomination for the Queensland Derby, so we'll see what pans out."
"He's heading in the right direction but there's a long way to go."
Single was the sales-topper at this year's Autumn Thoroughbred sale in Sydney with esteemed bloodstock agent Vin Cox picking up the unraced gelding for just $60,000, a very modest outlay when you consider his outstanding pedigree.
Not only is he by the remarkable High Chaparral, whose champion son So You Think registered his first European Group 1 victory in the Tattersalls Gold Cup at The Curragh on Sunday, but his dam, Myself (GB), is a G3 winning daughter of the exceptional racehorse Nashwan (Nashwan won 6 from 7 races including four G1s and defeated Danehill in the 1989 English Two Thousand Guineas).
Myself (GB) won the 1995 Nell Gwyn Stakes and was placed in several other Group races in Britain including the Cherry Hinton and the Queen Mary Stakes at Royal Ascot.
According to Arion Pedigrees, Single is a half brother to two Group performers in Europe - Sadler's Wells colt Ghayth, which was G2 placed, and Ego, by Green Desert, which ran fourth to Airwave in the 2000 G1 Cheveley Park Stakes.
Single's second dam Pushy, by renowned stamina influence Sharpen Up, was also a talented race mare which went one better than Myself when winning the G2 Queen Mary after placing in the G1 Cheveley Park while her sibling brother Jupiter Island claimed a litany of Group races over staying trips in England before taking out the 1986 Japan Cup.
With bloodlines like these Single will certainly make his presence felt should he line up in theĀ QLD Derby on 11th June at Eagle Farm.
